Australian Cattle Dog

Characteristics and Behavior
– Developed in Australia for herding cattle over long distances
– Medium-sized, short-coated dog
– Occurs in two main color forms: red or black hair distributed through a white coat
– Energetic and intelligent with an independent streak
– Forms a strong attachment to its owners and can be protective of them and their possessions
– High energy levels

– Affectionate and playful pet, but reserved with strangers and cautious in new situations

Appearance
– Sturdy, muscular, and compact dog
– Broad skull with muscular cheeks and a medium-length muzzle
– Pricked ears set wide apart
– Oval, dark eyes with an alert expression
– Strong neck and shoulders, straight forelegs, and round, arched feet

Size
– Female Australian Cattle Dog measures approximately 43-48 centimeters at the withers
– Male Australian Cattle Dog measures about 46-51 centimeters at the withers
– Length of the body is greater than the height at the withers
– In good condition, weighs around 18-25 kilograms

Coat and Color
– Two accepted coat colors: red and blue
– Blue dogs can be blue, blue mottled, or blue speckled with tan markings
– Red dogs are evenly speckled with solid red markings
– Both red and blue dogs are born white and develop their color as they mature
– Patches of solid or near-solid color are common, such as masks over the eyes and white markings

Tail
– Breed standards specify a natural, long, undocked tail
– Tail set moderately low and follows the slope of the back
– Hangs in a slight curve at rest, but may be carried higher when excited
– Features a good level of brush
– Tails are not docked in Australia, increasing agility and quick turning ability
